Heidi Dettwiler of Heron Montana was born in Pennsylvania but moved many times throughout her school years in Oregon and Montana, before graduating from high school at Hamilton in 1976. She then attended Montana State University at Bozeman where she studied architecture. After a year there, she moved to Billings where she studied at the Vocational Technical school and received a certificate in drafting. In 1981, Heidi worked for Aviation Maintenance Publishing Company in Wyoming, doing layouts and halftones for their magazine. This training has given her an eye for fine craftsmanship and a precise hand.
After moving to Trout Creek in August of 1986, Heidi did cartography and mapping for the Forest Service in the Cabinet Ranger District at Trout Creek.
Following her marriage in April of 1987 Heidi began putting her avocation photography and glass etching to work. "At first, it was a hobby," she says, "but so many people kept asking me to design special items for them and take graduation and family portraits, that I outgrew my space in our home.
Her etching on glass has become a popular item not only with local residents who are looking for something to commemorate a special occasion, but for tourists who want a memento of their visit to Montana. "My gift items are very personal and unique," says Dettwiler. "Often people are looking for something to commemorate a wedding, graduation, birth or Christmas gift." You can incorporate your own ideas, photo's, or artwork to make a one of a kind item that will be enjoyed by all.
Her work has been seen on the front cover of
Country's Best Log Homes magazine.
